Construction & Care
Every rug lists its construction type on the product page — here's what each one means and how to care for it.
Hand-Knotted
Each knot is individually tied by hand onto a cotton warp — the most time-intensive construction, producing a dense, durable pile that can last generations with care.
- —Vacuum gently on low suction — never use a beater bar or rotating brush, which can damage the hand-tied knots. Rotate the rug every 6 to 12 months so it wears evenly and fades uniformly in light.
- —For spills, blot immediately with a clean cloth and cold water — never rub. Spot clean with a mild wool-safe detergent diluted in cold water. For a deep clean, professional dry cleaning is recommended.
- —Always use a quality rug pad beneath the rug to protect the knot structure and prevent slipping. Keep the rug away from prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of its colour.
Hand-Tufted
Wool is punched through a fabric backing with a tufting gun, then the back is sealed with a latex coating — a faster construction that still produces a dense, plush pile.
- —Vacuum on low suction, keeping the head away from edges and any fringe. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub. Spot clean with cold water and a mild wool-safe cleaner, then blot dry.
- —Do not machine wash, steam clean, or soak — moisture can weaken the latex backing and cause the pile to detach. Professional cleaning is recommended every 12 to 18 months.
- —Always use a rug pad underneath — the latex backing requires airflow to stay fresh. If the rug gets wet, dry it thoroughly in a well-ventilated space and avoid leaving it damp for extended periods.
Flat Weave
Woven flat on a loom with no pile at all — thinner, lighter, and fully reversible, which makes it a durable choice for high-traffic areas.
- —Vacuum both sides regularly — flat weaves trap dust on both faces equally. For spills, blot quickly with cold water; flat weaves dry faster than pile rugs, making spot cleaning straightforward.
- —Spot clean with a mild detergent and cold water, rinse well, and air dry flat. Smaller flat weaves can be gently hand washed in cold water. Never tumble dry — always lay flat to prevent shrinkage or distortion.
- —Flip the rug occasionally so both sides wear and fade evenly. A thin non-slip rug pad underneath helps keep it in place and extends its life.
